Brown Crab, Cancer pagurus
The Brown Crab is common in cracks and crevices in rocky areas around Ireland. Like the Common Lobster, it belongs to a large group of animals called the Crustaceans. All crabs have five pairs of jointed legs, which enables them to move more quickly (although always in a sideways direction!). They also have a pair of strong jaws to feed with and a pair of antennae to feel with. The Brown Crab has two large black tipped pincers that it also uses for feeding and for defense. These claws can exercise a powerful grip so it is important to take care when handling these creatures. More info... References
