A Guide to Ireland's Aquatic Wildlife A Guide to Ireland’s Aquatic Wildlife is a series of four workshops providing an introduction to Ireland’s marine and freshwater wildlife. Dublin’s shoreline is a familiar site for many of us as we travel about our daily business, but how many of us are aware of the communities of animals and plants that live along aside us on the seashore or in our rivers? These workshops are designed to give anyone with an interest in nature and environmental issues a chance to learn about these fascinating communities. A number of safaris are planned for a variety of interesting habitats around Dublin’s coast, providing ample opportunity for observing fauna and flora that typify Ireland’s shoreline and waterways. Workshops may be taken separately or as part of the complete Aquatic Wildlife series.

A Guide to Ireland’s Seashore: Sandy shore, Salt Marsh and Dunes In this workshop, we visit the North Bull Island Nature Reserve, the perfect location for studying Ireland’s soft shore habitats. Date: Saturday, 12th September 2009. Location: North Bull Island Nature Reserve and Interpretive Centre Duration: 9am - 5pm Cost: €70
A Guide to Ireland’s Streams and Rivers Ever wondered how healthy your local river is? In this workshop, we will be learning how to use aquatic insects as indicators of water quality. We’ll also be learning about the fascinating animal communities that characterise Ireland’s streams and rivers. Date: Saturday, 26th September 2009 Location: UCD Belfield and a local river site (tbc). Duration: 9am - 5pm Cost: €70
An Introduction to Marine Biology Did you know that a jellyfish doesn’t have a brain? Or that an octopus has three hearts? In this workshop, we look at the biology of marine animals living around Ireland’s coasts. Practical work includes a mussel, squid and fish dissection. Date: 20th March 2010 Location: UCD Belfield Duration: 9am - 5.00pm Cost: €70
A Guide to Ireland’s Seashore: The Rocky Shore In this workshop, we visit Sandycove, a sheltered rocky shoreline that is home to a diverse array of marine animals and seaweeds. Learn how to identify animals and plants commonly encountered on the seashore. Tutor: Sarah Varian
Sarah Varian is a zoologist and underwater photographer with a PhD in fish biology and behaviour. She has worked on a wide variety of aquatic conservation projects in Ireland and around the world, including work as a marine protected areas scientist in Africa and New Zealand. She returned home to Ireland to set up Marine Dimensions in 2004 and is now rapidly becoming recognised as a marine environmental education specialist. |
